My ancestors may have come from Ireland, but I grew up in the forests of the Kaimai Ranges and swimming in the waters of the Ohinemuri and Waitawheta rivers. I live in Avondale, in Auckland, New Zealand.

Up in the hills behind the house I grew up in there was a stone wall. From that wall you could see far out across the Hauraki plains. I was given to understand that small wall was is what is left of a lookout, a place for Ngāti Hako sentries to watch and provide forewarning of travellers and invaders alike.

I am currently the technical implementation lead for Rakeiora, a Genomics Aotearoa project.
